Here are two examples. Now, when talking with my American, British, and German friends about these, the Americans all said that it was a UK, western European thing and that Americans didn't use them. Personally, in my household, we've gone through a few because we've used them so much. The American's just said "well, maybe you're just more British and fancy than the rest of us." I was shocked to hear that my fellow American's never had one in their homes in the States.
So here's my survey: leave a comment saying what part of the United States you are from (or what country you're from if you're outside of the US) and if you've had one of these in your home. You don't have to leave your name. I just need location and if you own one or have ever owned one.Thanks!

midwest - I've always had a "kettle" in my house.
sweden - had them for many years
southeast US, then moved to the midwest. Never seen one of those. We just boil water in a pot on the stove. Call us rustic...
Midwest: we never really had one at home, but every single person at my university had one of these. and lots of my friends have them at home.
Midwest: my family had one, and I had one in my college dorm room, and right now I have one at my desk at work!

Hmmmm.....have NEVER heard of a "water boiler" :) Is it electric? Used a "hot pot" when in college (dark ages), and had a kettle on the stove growing up. Mostly "nuke" my water now

Midwest: My family always heated water in a kettle on the stove, growing up. In college, I used an electric one. My fiancé and I now own an electric one and will use it often. His family also owned an electric kettle. But they're originally Canadian, so I don't know if it counts. :-)
Midwest. We don't heat water. I use a coffee maker!
From Montana, never had this style of kettle (that plugs in) but we've always had a stove top kettle that whistles when it boils. Being from Montana this is more common because you can take it camping and also use it on the camp fire so you get dual use out of one purchase. =O)
Germany - and we always had one at home!
